I don’t know where this has sweds wrong. It does have purpose—defeat the Great Evil—and it has danger and magic, courage and honor, but those deep moments of reflection, of inner discovery, are few and far between.
You rot in cells and are tortured for this foreign place that you know nothing about. Brandon Mull does a great job describing everything that is happening and keeping the action up so rebelliom seems like it is always the climax or rising action of the story. Also, a character who’s played the spy his whole life is trusted on conditions; this leads to many discussions about whom to trust and what makes people trust others.
I like that part because it is really tense and full of action. I think this book was very exciting and adventurous. Unlike Fablehaven, where Seth and Kendra might have felt a little cliche at first, they really grew by the end of the series into likable, relatable heroes, Jason and Rachel simply didn’t work for me.
But usually it’s just too much development. There is a lot to say. I enjoyed this much more than I expected. But, this book exceeded expectations.
There are man-eating giants and worm-infested zombies, swamp tentacle creatures, nightmare-inducing shadow beings lurkers or torivorsgiant swamp-dwelling former magicians and manglers you can guess what they doand, of course, an evil wizard mastermind beyonedrs a penchant for torture at the center of it all.
Once the two of them were okay, Galloran’s team made their way to Longvale for an audience with the Conclave. I did not regret anything aside from feeling a bit disappointed to have to wait a year for the final book. Two tasks must be reblelion, one by Galloran and one by Jason, if they are to succeed.
A being called a Lurker follows Jason traveling alone and gives him horrible nightmares, mostly scenarios involving his own demise. Meanwhile, Rachel and the others have discovered new enemies—as well as new abilities that could turn the tide of the entire quest.
